NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Former Titans running back Eddie George, the star of the Nashville Shakespeare Festival’s production of Othello, was surprised at curtain call yesterday when Dr. Bill Emendorfer, Executive Director of the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame, announced his induction scheduled for May 17, 2014.

George will be joined by fellow 2014 inductees Hope Hines as the Lifetime Achievement Inductee, Brentwood  Academy Coach Carlton Flatt, former Lady Vol basketball All-America Bridgette Gordon, basketball great, Popeye Jones, All America linebacker and NFL star, Paul Naumoff, former major league pitcher and coach Claude Osteen, ESPN Analyst Carolyn Peck and Allie Prescott, Memphis baseball legend and minor league executive. Being inducted posthumously are Eldridge Dickey Tennessee State All- American quarterback and Dorsey Simms legendary Tennessee Prep Basketball coach

Born in Philadelphia, Penn. on Sept. 24, 1973, Eddie George became one of the most successful running backs to ever touch a football. George attended Fork Union Military Academy for high school where he rushed a total of 1,372 yards, capturing the attention of Ohio State University’s coach John Cooper. He became a Buckeye in 1992, averaged 152.2 yards per game and received a degree in landscape architecture. In 1995, his senior season, Eddie broke the school’s single season rushing record with 1,972 yards and the touchdown record with 24. Eventually his accomplishments as an Ohio State Buckeye earned him the 61st Heisman Trophy.

In 1996 Eddie was drafted in the first round of the NFL to the Tennessee Titans and went on to win rookie of the year. With the Titans, George was selected to the Pro-Bowl four times in a row, 1997-2000, and helped his team make it into Super Bowl XXXIV against the St. Louis Rams.

George is the second NFL running back in history behind Walter Payton to rush for 10,000 yards, never missing a start. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2011. His career totals include 10,441 rushing yards, 268 receptions, 2,227 receiving yards and 78 touchdowns: 10 being receiving and 68 rushing.

The accomplishments and contributions Eddie George has made to football will allow him to be forever ingrained into the Tennessee Sports. George joins fellow Titans Bud Adams and Frank Wycheck in the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame.

The Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, May 17, in the Renaissance Hotel at 6:30 PM. For tickets and more information please contact Lynn Toy at (615)-202-3996.
