Titans to celebrate 50th season

Posted Apr 1, 2009

NASHVILLE, TENN. – In 1960, the Houston Oilers became one of the founding members of the new American Football League. This year the franchise will celebrate its 50th season in a number of avenues, including a special logo to commemorate the season. The logo, which is being released today, will be used throughout the season and integrated into a number of platforms on and off the field. Additionally, the NFL has also scheduled “Legacy Games” in which the team will play in special throwback Oilers uniforms versus other original AFL teams. The dates and opponents for those games will be revealed when the regular season schedule is announced later this month.

“It seems like yesterday that Lamar Hunt and I were getting together to talk about forming a new league,” said Titans owner K.S. “Bud” Adams, Jr. “The past 49 seasons have brought the fans and me great joy and at times great pain, but it has been a dream come true and a lot of hard work to own a team. It is hard to imagine how far pro football has come since 1960, and I am thrilled that we are able to celebrate the team’s roots this season in several different ways. We wanted to incorporate both franchise logos into our 50-year logo and I am really pleased with the results. This year is also special because it marks the 50th anniversary of our first championship.”

The 50-year logo will be used for merchandise, marketing materials and throughout the team’s publication platforms this year. Additionally, a special AFL commemorative jersey patch will be worn by all eight original teams this season.

Tennessee also will be featured in the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio in a nationally televised game on August 9th against AFL rival Buffalo as a precursor to the NFL preseason schedule. The game features the only two living original AFL owners in Adams and Ralph Wilson; and both teams will wear their throwback uniforms.

Among many elements of the celebration are heritage boards installed at LP Field in 2008 which graphically illustrate many of the Oiler marks and logos including the original “Roughneck” from 1960.  The heritage boards are located at the main entrances on the east and west sides of LP Field.
